Where The Spiritual and Sorta Religious Hang Out
I was sitting in a New Members class at a Unitarian Universalist church. We were all sipping lukewarm church coffee out of mugs decorated with an image of a circle with a flame in the middle, attempting small talk with relative strangers. Slowly, we all shared what had brought us there.
Some people had long and circuitous personal journeys, full of meditation retreats, big books and solitary hikes. Others had stories of the search for a spiritual home after leaving or never being a part of conventional religion but experiencing personal tragedy or the birth of a child. But, then one person said “well, I took this quiz online, and it said I was something I’d never heard of before.” The next person with a chuckle also agreed that “that quiz” had been a part of the process for them as well.
By the time a third person brought up the same thing, it was just “that quiz, of course.”
Yes, one of the most common ways people find their way into a particular religious group today is through a curiosity of internet history.
